Changes to Insurance effective 1 May 2008 |
 |
Protecting your assets is an important part of a smart financial plan. But that's not the only benefit. Peace of mind is priceless. Most Australians don't have enough insurance to protect themselves and their families from the unexpected, and many rely solely on their default superannuation insurance. To make sure that HOSTPLUS has you covered, we have made some changes to our default insurance arrangements effective 1 May 2008. If you are aged 25 and over, both new and existing members will now automatically receive 2 units of Death and Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) Insurance Cover at the standard scale instead of 1 unit. Each unit costs $1 a week. But don't worry, we also increased the value of both the management and standard scales of Death and TPD Insurance Cover, so you get more cover for your dollar. If you are an employee member and don't wish to keep the extra unit of Death and TPD insurance cover, simply write to us at HOSTPLUS, Locked Bag 3, Carlton South VIC 3053. We're also making a few other changes you should know about. If you travel overseas, you will now continue to be covered after you leave Australia in most circumstances - as long as you have sufficient funds in your super account to cover insurance premiums. Level of cover Permanent employees can apply for cover up to a maximum benefit level for Death and TPD of $2 million. This is an increase from $1.35 million (the previous Reasonable Benefit Limit amount). People who work on a casual basis can apply for cover up to a maximum level of 3 units for Death and TPD. Death only and Death and TPD insurance scales The amount of cover you get per dollar will increase by 10.5% for both the standard and management /clerical scale at no extra cost, so you will have more cover for your dollar. Death only premiums will be reduced from 70c to 50c per unit a week. With the increase in the value of units, you will be getting more for less! The amount of your benefit is determined by the number of units held and your age at the time you become eligible for a benefit. The table below shows the value of one unit for each age level at your next birthday. For members who are not at work on 30 April 2008, which means not actively participating in their usual occupation due to injury or illness, the higher level of TPD cover will only apply to an illness or injury that occurs after 30 April 2008.

Starting 1 May 2008, you will be able to apply for up to 90% of your income, with 75% of income payable to you and 15% payable as a contribution to your HOSTPLUS super account. Your benefit is worked out using the number of units held when you become eligible for a benefit. The table below shows the monthly benefit payable for each unit against the applicable annual salary. If your annual salary is between two of the salaries listed below, the units you apply for may be rounded up. You can be insured up to 90% of your monthly pre-disability salary, of which a maximum of 75% is payable to you and the balance as a contribution to your HOSTPLUS super account. You may, of course, choose to have Salary Continuance Insurance Cover that is less than 90% of your pre-disability salary.
