Our money tips
-
Cook big, bring in leftovers for lunch
Sure you've heard this one before, but I always try to cook a massive batch of anything I make for dinner, so there's plenty of leftovers to bring into work for lunch. My best cheap stir fry recipe is Thai style with chicken & vegies - just toss in peanut butter, chilli, oyster sauce and lemon! You'll be the envy of your colleagues! - Nick
-
Shop online
Whilst shopping is probably not the best idea when you're broke or trying to save, sometimes you just can't avoid needing new clothes. I shop at asos.com. Not only are they a season ahead of us because they're in the UK, but delivery is free and you can filter your search to ONLY look at sale items - which are usually really cheap. - Kirby
-
Become a tea drinker
This is a really small one, but I decided that instead of getting a coffee every morning, I'd switch to herbal tea. I didn't want to give up buying a hot drink on those cold Melbourne mornings but I wanted something healthier. It actually saves me $1.50 each day - which doesn't sound like that much but over just a few months is close to $100 I can spend elsewhere. - Mel
-
Get a bike
Cut down your carbon footprint and avoid public transport. Save heaps on petrol and train tickets AND keeps you healthy. There's a lot more bike paths around these days too. - Jen
-
Use public transport
Save money on parking and petrol and save yourself the stress of the peak hour traffic getting to and from work! Take public transport rather than drive to work. You'll be doing your bit for the environment too - Nick
-
Make your coffee at work
Make a coffee at work rather than buying one, the $3 a day will soon add up! - Neil
-
Buy petrol when it's cheap
Buy petrol early in the week because it’s cheaper and use your shopping receipt discounts. No matter where you shop or buy petrol there is generally a discount on offer so use it - Will
-
Sign-up for everything!
Sign up for every free customer rewards program you can - at shops and online. You'll get special discounts, deals and rewards usually by just providing your e-mail address. - Annette
-
Use the 30 day rule
The 30 day rule for big purchases – if there's something that you really want to buy, wait 30 days and ask yourself if you still really want that item. Usually I've forgotten about something by then, or decided I don't really need - and if it is something I still want at least I don't feel guilty about it and know I've thought it through!- Anne
-
Write a list
Write a shopping list before you go shopping and stick to it.Easier said than done, I know. But at least you'll know what you need and won't run out of money buying the stuff you don't need. - Aneta
-
Make the most of your local pub
Here’s my tip for pub goers: many pubs have loyalty programs for regulars – where you may get a percentage off the total bill. Alternatively, there could be specials during the week where drinks and meals are discounted. For example, watch out for steak days/nights and pints of Stella for only $7.50! - Gaz
-
Read books
Read a book - cheaper than magazines and they last longer. You can still get books from the library, or get an e-reader as they're cheaper online. - Shel
-
Have a clothes swapping party
Instead of buying new clothes all the time, get together with some friends and swap a few pieces that you are sick of, that way you all get clothes that are new to you without spending any money! - Pia
-
Sell things e-bay
Try selling old clothes and knick knacks that you don’t use or want anymore. Ebay or Swap Markets are great places to start. This means you'll be clearing out some room for all your new season purchases as well. - Clive
